There is a folk belief that stories are themselves animate beings. These stories, when they are not being told, are believed to live in villages, telling each other to each other. They roam out into the world, searching for episodes to add to themselves.
Eventually, a story locates and inhabits a person until it is time to be told out into the world again. If the person nourishes the story properly, it will reveal useful information about one's life path.
In the same way, artworks become stories, and take on more life as they
reveal themselves to the artist. As a storyteller, the artist uses the
tools of imagery and materials to relate the story. The characteristics of
surface quality, emotion, embellishment, exaggeration, color, etc., all
build up the artwork's personality. Each finished piece, large or small, is
executed over a very long period of time, and evolves gradually out of an
organic and respectfully attended process. Every aspect of the artist's
lifestyle is reflected in this process, creating a dynamic
relationship between artist and artwork, storyteller and story. It is out of
this relationship that the most inspiring and satisfying elements of
painting can be found, both for the artist and ultimately, the viewer.
